The Catlins
The Catlins region extends from Kaka Point to
Fortrose in the south east corner of the South Island of New Zealand.
This area is renowned for the rugged coastline scenery, the podocarp
forests and some rare species of wildlife. Petrified forest remains at
Curio Bay, beautiful secluded waterfalls and lakes, large tracts of
ancient forest and peaceful farmland valleys all combine to make this
region a piece of New Zealand that is unique.
The Southern Scenic Route passes through the
Catlins and there are some wonderful places to visit. There are many
attractions in this part of New Zealand and a stay of at least two
days is recommended for you to appreciate all the natural beauty of the
region.
